Meet the Media: Sarah Kester

We were lucky enough to interview journalist, Sarah Kester, as part of our newest series, “Meet the Media”. Hailing from Oshawa, Ontario, Sarah covers topics like fitness, celebrities, beauty and more and her work has been featured in premiere publications, such as USA Today, CBC News, Heathline, and more. Below, Sarah shares how she got her start in the journalism industry, what she likes to do in her spare time, and advice the aspiring journalist needs to hear!

How did you get your start in journalism? Did you always see yourself being a journalist?

I’ve been incredibly passionate about writing from a young age. I was always putting pen to paper, whether that was song lyrics, poems, or even stories. But it wasn’t until I was 15 that I started contributing to a ton of online publications. Thing is: no one knew I was 15! I always saw myself being a journalist, but I never really took it seriously until my grade 12 journalism teacher intervened. She believed in me and encouraged me to pursue it as a profession. I am seriously indebted to her.

What is an accomplishment you are most proud of in your career?

When my writing was featured in my first-ever print magazine. I took a picture of myself with it so I could cherish the moment forever. I’m also interviewing Kristen Davis from Sex and the City this week. It’s one of my favorite shows and one of the main reasons I became a writer, so it’s definitely a full-circle moment.

What advice would you give to an aspiring journalist?

Be passionate about what you’re doing. I got to where I am today because of my passion for writing. It helped me land writing gigs at a young age, build contacts within the industry, and never give up even when faced with rejection or adversity. Also, read as much as you can! It’s fun and helps any writer improve.

What are you doing when you’re not writing?

I am usually hanging with my adorable dog, watching The Office for the millionth time, or reading.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I hope to finally publish the YA fiction books I’ve been working on for the past 10 years. I also hope to be writing for Cosmopolitan magazine since it’s always been my dream publication to write for. (Cosmo, if you see this, call me!).

Wild Card — Favorite place you’v traveled to?

Truthfully, I haven’t travelled very far in my life. But once I’m able to, I’d love to go somewhere tropical to lie on a beach somewhere, cocktail in hand. I’d also love to visit either Ireland or South Africa, since my family is from there.
